Safety Tips for Bikefest 2019

Bikefest 2019 is almost here and as many bikers around the Midwest prepare for a fun weekend, it’s important to keep safety top of mind. Our Lake of the Ozarks attorney has a passion for riding and we’re here to spread the word on some top safety tips to keep in mind as you head out for a biking weekend to remember. Take a look below at the tips O’Donnell Law Center has compiled for our fellow bikers during Bikefest.

Riding Safety Tips:

Always wear your helmet & protective gear.

It’s a state law in Missouri, but surrounding states don’t all have a helmet law in place. Protect your head by wearing a helmet at all times while riding. Not only is a helmet important but wearing the right protective clothing is, too. Leather is the one of the more durable protective clothing items you can wear.

Look twice before pulling into traffic.

Ensure traffic is clear before you pull onto a road or switch lanes. Others may not have good visibility of your motorcycle so you have to ensure there is room for you. It can be hard to get up to speed when turning onto a road so ensure traffic flow allows you time to get up to speed to blend into traffic smoothly.

Drive defensively.

Try to anticipate the movements of other motorists on the road. This can be tricky at times, but thinking ahead about potential movements of others can get you in the right defensive mindset. Thinking about potential situations on the roadway can help better prepare you if quick action is needed to avoid an accident.

Avoid blind spots on other vehicles.

A motorcycle is a fairly small vehicle and it’s important that you are visible to your fellow motorists on the road. Avoid driving in the blind spot of other larger vehicles. SUVs, trucks, and especially semi trucks all have pretty big blind spots.  If you can avoid it, don’t drive next to a vehicle for an extended length of time.

Be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Driving while alert is vital to your safety and the safety of others on the roadway. Ensure you are alert and keep your senses heightened while riding. Being aware of your surroundings can help you keep tabs on the movements of other vehicles  and potential dangers that may be lurking ahead on the road.

Never ride while under the influence.

Beside the fact that it’s illegal, driving or riding under the influence is very dangerous. You should never drive while intoxicated for your own safety and the safety of others on or around the road.
